Ostuni, ‘la citta bianca’ is a gorgeous town with whitewashed houses (giving it the name ‘the white city’). It’s full of life in the summer with bars, gelaterias (ice-cream parlours), cafès, pizzerias and restaurants. Finding the best eats and treats can be a little daunting until you get into the swing of it. So to get you started, we’ve put together some recommendations on where to eat and drink in Ostuni.
Something very important to know is how seriously Italians take their gelato…ice-cream here is serious business. Unlike UK culture, on a Saturday night adults will go out to get a gelato, not a beer!
A couple of our favourites are:
Create your own creamy fantasy here: this ice-cream bar is full of luscious home-made ice-creams with a variety of indulgent toppings. Because it’s in a main piazza, we recommend sitting at a table outside to enjoy seeing the world go by.
If you’re after something a little stronger, head to this cocktail bar on your evenings out in Ostuni. Owner Leonardo makes fantastic cocktails that are heavenly and well worth the wait.
A little café with a gorgeous menu. Coffee and More serves cakes and pastries in the morning, salads and nibbles at lunch and some heartier meals for the evenings. Don’t be fooled by the word salad – the portions are generous and can therefore easily be shared by two. A glass of crisp rosé wine is the perfect accompaniment.
The best pizza in Ostuni. In particular, try their still soft, freshly-made thin crust pizzas, in addition to the freshest tastiest toppings.
Tucked away in the myriad of small streets in the heart of the centro storico is this gem of a restaurant. With a flight of steep, small steps at the entrance it’s not an ideal place to try to get to with pushchairs. However, once you’re there it’s like stepping into a secret world, due to its small terraces of tables hidden away under an enchanting red peppercorn tree.
The menu is a modern take on medieval Pugliese recipes and a real delight: the antipasti will take you to heaven. Taverna della Gelosia is one of our personal favourite places to eat and drink in Ostuni.
Finally, near Ostuni’s medieval cathedral is a Michelin star restaurant, Il Cielo. Located in the 5* hotel La Sommità it’s a beautiful setting for an evening meal. Modern presentation and laboratory inspired ‘deconstructed’ and ‘reconstructed’ dishes make this a very special restaurant to visit. Remember you’ll need to book in advance, and there’s also a dress code.
